January 14, 2015 2:40 pm

We are delighted to announce that the flagship product Kalettes®, the new ‘superfood’ created by crossing Brussels sprouts and kale, will be available in various European countries such as Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands from early 2015. These countries join the UK, where Kalettes® has been available since 2010 in three different stores – Marks and Spencer, Waitrose and Asda. The goal is to make it available across the whole of Europe so that every family can enjoy its unique qualities.
As part of its marketing campaign in 2015, Kalettes® will be exhibited by Tozer Seeds at the leading international trade fair in the fresh produce sector: FRUIT LOGISTICA – 4-6 February, Hall 1.2, Stand B-04. During FRUIT LOGISTICA 2015, Kalettes® will be officially introduced to the worldwide media and all professional visitors. This presentation will take place on the second day of the exhibition and will reveal the different activities that the brand is planning to develop to raise awareness about this new vegetable which is surprising many families with its versatility, flavour and outstanding properties.

This new vegetable is a unique fusion of fresh and nutty flavours and was created from the desire to produce a Brussels sprout with a more subtle flavour, which was a versatile ingredient and looked great. The result: a brand new vegetable which looks like a tiny cabbage with green frilly leaves and streaks of purple. Great looks aside, its health-giving properties also deserve a special mention: just 100g of Kalettes® contain double the amount of vitamin B6 and twice the amount of vitamin C than standard Brussels sprouts.
The health benefits of this new vegetable are further enhanced by its wide range of cooking possibilities. Kalettes® may well be one of the most versatile vegetables around, as it can be eaten in various forms such as sautéed, roasted, grilled or even raw. Its great flavour has proven to be a hit with both adults and children and it is also really easy to cook.

Creation process

Kalettes® is the result of 15 years of hard work and dedication (using traditional breeding techniques) by the British vegetable seed house Tozer Seeds. Kalettes® is a non-GMO vegetable developed through traditional hybridization and not genetic modification. Crossing kale with Brussels sprouts was a natural fit since they are both from the Brassica Oleracea species which also includes cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli, so the result of this new vegetable is a tiny cabbage with green frilly leaves and streaks of purple.

Being a true seasonal vegetable it can’t be grown in summer so it is only available from November through to March.
The creation of Kalettes® has been hailed by the professional sector, winning third place at the FRUIT LOGISTICA Innovation Awards 2013, a distinction which is voted by the visitors to the international trade show.
