Why you’ll be eating Kalettes® this Christmas

November 24, 2017 11:16 am

Kalettes® are gaining popularity with foodies and trendsetters, and will be the first vegetable with its own pop-up store in Central London before Christmas, with all profits raised going to a charity helping people in need.

Kalettes®, the new British superfood that’s a natural cross between kale and Brussels sprouts, is being harvested just in time for Christmas, and it’s to become the new must-have item on everybody’s shopping list.

Here are four reasons why this tiny little vegetable ticks all the right boxes for those in the know, ranging from your top Michelin chefs to streetwise foodies.

1. Reinventing the British Christmas

Christmas is the time when chefs delve into the past to breathe fresh life into timeworn classics. “We are all familiar with the good old Brussels sprout, but I have to say Kalettes® will definitely be on my menu this Christmas, and not just as a side dish”, says Bridget Colvin, chef and teacher at Michael Roux Jr. and Jamie Oliver’s cooking schools. “We Brits love our Christmas leftovers almost as much as the festive meal itself. Sadly, left-over Brussels sprouts often end up in the bin, because their flavour seems to intensify once they’re cooked and that can be off-putting. That’s not the case with Kalettes®: these little beauties manage to maintain their fresh sweet taste”.

2. Cooler than kale

Kale has been around for ages, in fact this great nutritious vegetable has become so common that even McDonald’s now uses it now in its salads, “Kale is absolutely everywhere, there are even kale crisps and kale crackers, in fact we’re almost overdosing on kale and there’s a danger that people will get bored with it,” says Chris White, trade journalist and fresh produce influencer. “So for me Kalettes® are a fantastic new spin on kale, they’re the new way to eat kale”, he adds.

Giorgio Locatelli, the famous Italian chef who runs the exclusive Locanda Locatelli Michelin starred restaurant in London told BBC The Big Family Cooking Showdown that even though he wasn’t a fan of kale he really liked Kalettes®.

3. It’s a natural detoxifier

Kalettes®, like kale, are a natural vitamin and nutrient bomb, with outstanding detox properties. According to Maria Dow, an NHS dietician and a writer at Dows Diets, they contain double the amount of vitamin B6 and twice the amount of vitamin C than standard Brussel sprouts. Kalettes® are very beneficial for the heart, intestines and immune system, too, she says.. They’re also rich in vitamin K, a rare and powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and liver detoxifier. With most of us drinking and eating too much over Christmas, we all need to show our liver some love, don’t we!
